WORK has begun on the £5m National Football Development Centre in Newport which will be in the Newport International Sports Village. The multi-purpose facility will house the FAW’s office and administration headquarters, along with a 100-seat conference centre and various meeting and breakout rooms.   Planning consent for the project was granted in January and work on preparing the outdoor pitches started earlier this year. Funding of £2.6m for the project has been secured from football governing bodies Uefa and Fifa with another £1.5m coming from the FAW Trust and Sport Wales.   The build will be managed by the Cardiff office of international construction group ISG, which won the project following a competitive tender bid with Cardiff-based Boyes Rees Architects and structural engineers Shear Design. Cardiff-based Boyes Rees Architects and structural engineers Shear Design are part of the project team.   ISG regional director Jon James said: “The National Football Development Centre is a great project for us to work on and it’s fantastic to be here today to mark the start of this new development. We are very proud to be delivering this project for the FAW, which we know marks an exciting moment for football in Wales.”   Former Welsh international footballer Ian Rush, who was at a ceremony marking the start of work said: “It is fantastic, a fantastic project that is going to make a massive difference to the development of football in Wales, at all levels. Having access to state-of-the art training facilities right up through the age groups, as well as the improved back room infrastructure is only going to enhance the chances of Wales achieving success on the world stage.”   Completion of pitches is expected in September with the main building scheduled for occupation next February.
