Plans for a new hospital near Cwmbran were given the green light this week. Health Minister Mark Drakeford has approved initial plans for a Specialist and Critical Care Centre (SCCC). The new centre, which will be built at the Llanfrechfa Grange Hospital site near Cwmbran, will cost £242 million and will consolidate specialist services in the region and will include a trauma and emergency assessment centre; specialist cardiac, radiology and stroke services; critical care; an obstetrics unit; emergency and complex gynaecology; and specialist paediatric emergency and inpatient care. It is estimated that it will be fully operational in 2019.

Chief Executive of Aneurin Bevan Health Board Andrew Goodall said: "I am delighted that the next stage of this very important development has been given the green light. The SCCC has always had strong support from clinicians and patients in the Gwent area. This agreement now means that the Health board can proceed with its local planning with the urgency it deserves."
