600 Room Student Accommodation Build Approved for Cardiff
Cardiff Council's planning committee has given the green light to plans for a 602-bedroom student accommodation block in Cardiff. Developer JR Smart will build the student accommodation in two blocks at its Capital Quarter development on Tyndall Street in the city centre. The student housing element will have 18 car parking spaces, including six disabled bays, as well as space for 302 bicycles.
This revised scheme replaces previously approved plans for about 300 student bedrooms and a care home, which has now been scrapped. Construction of a neighbouring office block has already begun, while councillors were told a £1m-plus footbridge over the railway line would start at Christmas.
Yesterday’s approval by the planning committee comes after more than 1,100 student rooms across the capital were given the green light last year. These were in locations including Windsor Lane (177 rooms), Newport Road (198 rooms) and St Andrew’s Lane (84 rooms), all in the city centre.
